Coca-Cola Blak

Filed under: Coffee, Coke, Soda — amateurfoodnerd @ 1:25 pm

The general reaction to Coke Blak has been a simple "Ew, coffee and Coke? Gross!" At first upon learning of the new Coke product, my reaction was the same. However, after thinking about it longer, I decided "Eh, it might be pretty good and maybe it will get me to update my blog." So, I set out on a mission to find the coveted Coke Blak. My first try was at the closest grocery store to my house, Safeway. Sadly, after combing the aisles in desparation, they only had the outrageously priced four-pack.

Next, I went to Nob Hill, a chain owned by Raley's that is fairly common in the Bay Area I call home. I looked to their soda section, and there it was, standing out like a brown beacon rising up from a sea of "regular" soda.

I waited until today to try it, because it was too late for caffeine by the time I bought it yesterday. At first, I was a little scared. I like the smell of coffee, but no amount of cream nor sugar can make it drinkable for me. Too strong and bitter! So, I prepared myself, then opened up the bottle and took a whiff. The smell almost killed me. It was pungent and sickeningly sweet. So far, this wasn't looking good. Reluctantly, I took a sip. It didn't seem to taste that bad. In fact, it was surprisingly good! Regretfully, it didn't last long. A few sips later and I couldn't take it anymore. It was cloyingly sweet. I couldn't see how the mere 12 grams of sugar in the bottle could make it so sweet, but it did. Also, the aftertaste is horrible. It's reminiscent of a very strong fake maple flavoring, like the "Old-Fashioned Pancake Syrup" at IHOP on steroids. I guess I should also note that I have a strong distaste for maple flavor, be it real or fake.

All in all, I only recommend this if you're in to coffee. It would probably help. Also, watch out for the super-sweetness. It's viscious. As for me, I'm out a buck and a half and have 3/4 of a bottle of Coca-Cola Krap left on my hands. Any takers?

Overall Rating: 4/10 (would be better if less sweet)

Purchased: Nob Hill (Livermore)

Price: I forget, but probably somewhere between $1.50 and $2.00

  1. Mmm…Cloyingly sweet. I really suggest you hold on to the bottle and eBay it in about 10 years. You’ll make your money back…Barely.

  3. Ahh. Yes. I know. It’s a grave fault of mine. Luckily, I’ll be buying a phone with a high quality camera within the next couple months, so that will make it easier to take pictures around the house and at restaurants and such.

  4. Aha! Someone who dared try it! You’ve made me glad I didn’t buy that six pack I saw at Ralph’s supermarket. o.o

  6. I just can’t bring myself to try it. However, if someone gave me a coffee & cola flavored candy, I probably would.

Oh, suggestion on the photo dilemma – check out Flickr and find folks who have photos with CC licenses that say you can use them or write and ask or permission to use their photo on your blog. I haven’t had anyone turn me down yet when I ask nicely.

  7. I have to add my differing opinion to your postings because I actually liked Coke Blak… yes, I know I am probably one in a million, but I have to say I would rather drink that 8oz bottle and get the kick I got with only the 12 grams of sugar than cracking open a 16oz energy drink and gorging on the 200 or so grams of sugar inside. Besides I can’t stand coffee!!!

  9. i love coffee and i love coke put the two together you have the worst combination since wonderbread and cool whip. first it tricks you into tasting like coke then a few seconds later it tastes like the worst imitation of coffee ever. the first time i tried it was in vegas they were giving them out for free…and yet they can do that all they want i wouldnt except another one ever again.

  10. Hey, I have a suggestion for a flavor that will last for at least 20 years. Mix concentrated cranberry juice syrup, about 1/3 to 2/3 of coca cola, hurry before Pepsi gets it. You will love it. Great marriage of flavors! That’s all. I tried Blak, very cute name.

  11. Blak is pretty tasty but it didn’t give my quite as big a perk as what I expected. For coffee energy I think those Starbucks shots are still the best out there.

  12. Hmmm, been meaning to give CC Blak try. Don’t ask why, but I recently mixed a Starbucks Double Shot into a Burger King chocolate shake. Again don’t know why I tried that, but it was quite good!

  13. I love coffee and I love Coke but this was the worst thing I’ve ever tried to drink… not counting the two times my office cafeteria sold me rotten milk. EXTREMELY sweet, burnt caramel taste. And, yeah, I think you’re right about the maple. I couldn’t even get past the first swig, it was that bad.

  14. Sweet, burnt caramel taste? Like creme brule? Personally, I’ll take Coke in a bottle separately at one time, and an Venti Iced Americano (4 shots over ice) at another. Although I haven’t tried it myself, for a whopping kick there’s always BAWLS Guarana. Sounds like Red Bull on steroids.

  15. I actualy love blak. It might just be me though cuz I’m 13 and the first time I tried red bull I though it tasted like beer. Blak sorta tastes like cremey red bull.
